Experience Emotions Without Overwhelm

We believe that there is no such thing as a bad emotion. We all feel sad, angry or anxious at times. It is part of what makes us human. Just as we can feel joy,  love, excitement. We need that complete range of emotions to be able to navigate life in a healthy balanced way. But any emotion can become a problem when it takes over, when you become overwhelmed by emotion.

During our sessions, we can help you develop an increased awareness of how you are feeling, what effect your emotions are having on you and help you develop techniques to give your emotions a place, so that you don't become overwhelmed.

Coping Techniques and Emotional Support

Supportive Therapy

Support through tough times. We all face times in life where we are faced with unique challenges that are beyond what we can cope with by ourselves. Speaking with a counsellor can help you feel heard, make sense of how you are feeling and why. It provides a non-judgemental platform for you to talk and share. Your counsellor offer support and guidance and work with you on techniques that will help you cope.

Why do I feel this way?

Healing starts with understanding. Why do I feel depressed or anxious. Why am I so angry all the time. Why do I have the need to be liked?

Recognising the why can help you direct and balance your emotions in a healthy way.

What am I feeling?

Learn to recognise helpful and hurtful thoughts and emotions. Sometimes we struggle to name our emotions, Am I angry, frustrated or disappointed. Is what I'm feeling fear or anxiety?
Recognising the emotion for what it is can be a good first step to learning to understand ourselves and others.

Find relief

At times, our life circumstances can cause our hearts and minds to feel weighed down, feel sick. At other times our own thought patterns can become the cause of our problems.

Have you experienced childhood trauma? Has it left you with unhealthy patterns of behaviour, or feelings of worthlessness, guilt, anger?

Speaking with a counsellor can help you identify and address those feelings and behaviours in a healthy way.

Talk Sessions

At times, we just need to be heard. You may not need solutions, or want suggestions. You just need someone to listen, and to hear you. No agenda, no judgement. Just another human who is willing to sit with you and talk.

Many times, we find that by simply verbalizing our thoughts and feelings, we gain a clarity that wasn't there before.

Doing so in a safe environment, with a person trained to assist you should the need arise, provides just that platform you need.

Mood Management

Struggling with ongoing depression, anger or anxiety. Is it affecting your relationships with family and friends?

Let us help you come to a better understanding of the reasons why you feel the way you do, and how it has an effect on those around you.

Feel better inm yourself, and feel better around others.

Embracing Neurodiversity

At Western Sydney Counselling & Therapy, we specialise in working with neurodiverse clients. Having over 15 years of experience in working with children on the spectrum we have developed a unique program incorporating some of the most innovative and up to date strategies to assist clients with ASD to feel more comfortable in their environment.
Our method of embracing the lived world of a person with ASD and joining in their experience while in session, has helped many of our clients see incredible improvement in their day-to-day lives. We have seen clients who are non-verbal, displaying sensory avoidance, struggling greatly with both interoception & proprioception (noticing and making sense of ones own body signals and emotional state, as well as the body language and emotional cues of others), develop the skills and desire to voluntarily engage with others and doing so effectively and comfortably, being able to recognise and understand emotional cues and respond accordingly.

Our method includes educating those around the person with ASD. Helping them better understand why certain approaches simply do not work with an autistic person and then providing them with the techniques and skills to assist their family member / friend / colleague / student navigate day to day life. Just having a proper understanding can prevent a lot of frustration and conflict and create a calmer environment for all.

About Sebastiaan

Sebastiaan's practice started operating in Sydney in 2022. Discerning an increased need in mental health support in the fast expanding Western Sydney area he initially opened up a Equine Assisted Therapy practice in Leppington, which still operates very successfully with three therapists.

In time, he decided to expand the practice and added traditional counselling sessions to his practice. Realising that people live varied lives and having the desire to be available to anyone who needs emotional support, he provides traditional room based therapy, 'walk and talk' therapy (walk around a welcoming environment while engaging in therapy), and online / phone sessions (Telehealth).

Our practice works with privately funded and NDIS clients and works with children, teenagers and adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

While we welcome your questions through our contact form, we have put some common answers to questions here for you.

How much does it cost?

Our regular sessions are charged out at $195 per session (NDIS rates charged may depend on your plan and the rates stipulated under the NDIS).

An initial intake and assessment will usually take more time and include us reading through any reports you may be able to provide from previous therapists. And as such this will be charged out at a higher rate.

How long will my therapy take?

Due to the varied nature of each individual's mental health and conditions, it is impossible to accurately indicate how long each client will need to attend. Our counselling sessions aim to empower, enhance self-esteem, and foster resilience. It encourages self-reflection, problem-solving skills, and aids in managing stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

While some clients can be helped in just a few sessions through techniques such as CBT, others may need ongoing sessions for much longer.

During your initial assessment, this is something you can discuss with your therapist.

What types of customers have you worked with?

Our work includes clients with all types of mental health conditions including Autism, ADHD, Bi-Polar, Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, OCD, ODD, PTSD etc. Our specialisation is in dealing with Trauma (PTSD/CPTSD) and people with ASD.

How do you approach therapy with your clients?

We firmly believe that each individual client is unique and therefore our approach with every client is to both discuss and observe/assess what will be the most effective approach. Your wellbeing comes first in everything we do. So while we try and work based on a plan we work out together, we will always approach our sessions on how you show up on that day.

Our approach is based on the Gestalt method of psychotherapy and it's I / Thou approach to the client/practitioner relationship.

What we have planned/prepared for the session will never take precedence over what your needs are that day.
